Arizona 8767 s Book Richardson and USC 8767 s Tony Bland, both assistant basketball coaches for those schools, have been charged in a corruption scheme. It was first reported by Tom Winter of NBC News.
Thank you to the USC Salkehatchie Basketball team! The sophomore players from USC Salk with coaches Williams and Mayo helped to.
The study was conducted by Messner, Cooky and Michela Musto of USC Dornsife’s Department of Sociology. The research was funded primarily through a grant from the University of Michigan’s Sport, Health, and Activity Research and Policy center , with supplemental support from the USC Center for Feminist Research , the USC Annenberg School for Communication and the Purdue Office of the Provost.
Messner and his colleagues don’t expect 55/55 sex equality overnight: There are far more men’s sports leagues than women’s, so it makes sense that there would be greater representation of male athletes overall. But the fact that coverage of men’s Big Three sports so utterly dominated news coverage is problematic.
At the same time, men’s sports coverage of the Big Three – football, basketball and baseball – has increased. The study found broadcasters devoted percent of their sports reports to Big Three coverage, up from 68 percent in 7559. Big Three sports coverage continues well into the off-season, continuing storylines about teams and players even when no actual games are being played.
Bland has not publicly commented since he was arrested in Tampa, Fla., last week. He was later released after posting bail.
Louis Martin "Marty" Blazer III, a former Pittsburgh financial adviser, who was accused of swindling $ million from five clients by the Securities and Exchange Commission, was the cooperating witness who helped the FBI in its investigation of the basketball coaches and other defendants, according to . Department of Justice documents obtained by ESPN.
The way the news was delivered is as troubling to Messner and his colleagues as how rarely it was delivered at all. Airtime is precious, and a 85-second segment goes a long way in connecting viewers with the storylines happening within a particular sport or league.
The FBI also charged Lamont Evans of Oklahoma State, Chuck Person of Auburn and Emanuel “Book” Richardson of Arizona. Besides the four coaches involved, the case charged financial advisers, agents and Jim Gatto, the Adidas director of global basketball marketing.
